Regional Medical Students Donate Blood

With a great shortage of blood for patients, studies reveal various side effects. Because of this, medical students in the Busan region have come out as donors.
An association of students in the medical school at Pusan National University stated on October 24 that they plan on around 1,000 medical students voluntarily participating in blood donations for two days starting from November 1. For the procedure, blood donation vehicles will be placed in the medical campuses at PNU, Dong-A, Go-shin, In-je, and Kyung-sang universities with the help of organizations including the Busan Blood Center. During the event, about 500 employees at each university hospital will positively volunteer, not to mention medical students.
Especially, this blood drive is for active promotion of a ¡®Registered blood donation system¡¯ and for recommending the system to medical students registering with the purpose of continuous donation for patients.
What is the ¡®Registered blood donation system¡¯? It is a promise made with a healthy blood donor to regularly donate and take continuous part in donations by selecting a proper period. Participants in the system are able to take complete blood count and liver function examinations once a year and check the blood examination results on-line. Moreover, eleven national museums are available for free.
The student association of medical schools in the Busan region will induce medical students to register for donations of hematopoietic stem cells for treating leukemia patients. Once one agrees to donate the cells, if a leukemia patient appears to have similar matching cells of a donor on the waiting list, the donation procedure takes effect after checking whether or not the donor agrees.
Persons at the medical students¡¯ association at Pusan National University said, ¡°To practice what medical students have learned as a preliminary doctor, we established this blood donation event.¡±
