New Ja-gal-chi Market Opens Surprising Waterfront Area

After a building establishment in August, the new Ja-gal-chi market delayed re-opening until now when a waterfront area is open to visitors for the first time, for the Ja-gal-chi festival.

The committee of the Ja-gal-chi festival opens the waterfront of the new market from 10 am to 6 pm during the festive period from October 19 till October 22.

Having an area of 1,890 square meters, it shows the view of the Young-do bridge and a complete view of the southern exposure. It also has sculptures symbolizing the market and a rest area decorated with wood that attracted people¡¯s attention on the first day of the festival.

Visitor Kim (53) who was at the waterfront said, ¡°Because of the wide open view, it cools down deep inside my mind. However, the fact that the new building¡¯s door is locked tight is a shame around here, making a wretched atmosphere.¡±

When the festival is over on October 22, this place will be closed down again. Shopkeepers haven¡¯t moved in because there is no one to superintend the waterfront area in front of the empty building. It is worried that the place might cause some safety accidents or turn into a misconduct area.

Persons at the Busan Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation explained, ¡°The corporation gave temporary permission to open the area under the festival committee¡¯s responsibility of self-maintenance during the festive period. Until the re-opening of the market after the festival, the corporation has to close down the place for various reasons.¡±

Currently, shopkeepers indefinitely postpone moving in because they still have not found proper measures about the rental fees and there is some serious tension between union members of merchants about using facilities within the market.
