National Tax Service Begins Audit of KBS, Chosun Ilbo,

and Maeil Business Newspaper

The National Tax Service (NTS) launched an audit of domestic major broadcasters and newspapers. According to a source, it began its regular audit of KBS, Chosun Ilbo, Maeil Business Newspaper, MBN, Chungang Ilbo and the parent companies of KBS and Chosun Ilbo.

According to the tax authority and other press, the NTS has notified that it will start its regular tax audit on the broadcasters and their parent companies. The period of the regular tax audit will be from Oct. 30 until Jan. 23 next year. That is 60 business days.

It is five years since the NTS launched a regular tax audit of domestic major broadcast and newspaper companies. The last audit was during the Kim Dae Jung administration in 2001. The NTS normally audits domestic corporations every five years.

A source from the NTS explained, ¡°This upcoming audit is a regular tax audit that is done every five years. I want to make sure that this audit is to be conducted on the arbitrary judgment of local tax offices, totally different from the previously conducted audits with special political aims.¡±

Another source said, ¡°We will audit the general tax administration of those companies at first, but there is a possibility there will be investigations into owner-possessing stocks, domination, inheritance and their transfer.¡±
