Shackle Noises of Busan Subway

The Busan Transportation Corporation, environmental groups and learned circles have joined forces to create a target figure for noise management on the Busan subway. Decreasing the noise arouses public expectation.
The Transportation Corporation held its third Environmental Committee meeting with ten members, including professors connected with the corporation, and the Busan Cooperative Environmental Movement. They met in the large conference room at the transportation building in Beom-chen Dong in Jin Gu in the afternoon of October 19. The committee confirmed the target figure for subway noise that was established by working-level talks on October 2.
Target values were divided into three stages. For the first stage, the target for average noise between each station on the first line is set at 75 decibels, while the second and third lines are set at 80 decibels by 2007. The second stage calls for 74§¼ on the first line, and 78§¼ on the second and third lines by 2010. For the last stage, targets are 73§¼ on the first line, and 75§¼ on the second and third lines after 2015.
Moreover, maximum instantaneous noises are set at 86§¼ on the first line and 90 §¼ on the second and third lines for the first stage, 86§¼ on the first line and 88§¼ on the second and third lines for the second stage, and 83§¼ on the first line and 85§¼ on the second and third lines for the third stage.
To accomplish this plan, the corporation will establish nineteen extra rail coating systems next year, using a total of 44 systems until 2010. The corporation will reduce rail grinders and monthly vehicle cycles and will achieve the target noise control with special management on sharp curves.
The environmental committee of subway system was composed of thirteen members from the environmental group, university professors and executives of the Busan Transportation Corporation in September 21. The group was established after sixteen citizens, under the leadership of the Busan Cooperative of Environmental Movement, demanded noise damages against the Busan Transportation Corporation on September 7.
General Manager Kim Moon-hoi at the corporation said, ¡°It is meaningful to institute the target figures for subway noises with the joint participation of environmental groups, the learned world and the corporation for the first time in the nation. The group will go ahead to attain the goals.¡±
