Be aware of Chinese Cabbage
As domestic prices of cabbage have been skyrocketing for a few months, Chinese cabbage and Chinese kimchi are sold to customers as domestic cabbage and kimchi products.
The National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAQS) revealed said yesterday, “Prior to Chusok, we have been investigating the origins of agricultural products. We have found that four agricultural product stores have already distributed Chinese kimchi as made in Korea. A brief history is that they sold kimchi made with Chinese cabbage.”
A kimchi store located in Busan Jin-gu purchased Chinese cabbage at 550 to 580 won each, made kimchi, and then sold some to school food catering services as domestic kimchi by falsifying the origin of the product.
Another store was closed because it sold foreign pork and hot pepper powder by misrepresenting the origins of the products. A source said that as the price of agricultural products rise, some stores act against the law.
The source from NAQS urged, “It is important to be aware that Korean cabbage and Chinese cabbage look different. Chinese cabbage looks round and when two leaves are peeled off, we can’t see white leaves. A domestic cabbage leaf is green. Prior to Chusok, phony agricultural products go around to domestic customers, so they should be aware.”
Busan NAQS will keep investigating counterfeit agricultural products selling in the markets until October 4 with a special police task force and NAQS inspectors. In the event any fake agricultural products are found, contact 1588-8122.
