Train Fares to be Hiked

Next year, train passengers will have to pay higher fares on weekends and during high-demand periods. The system has already been applied to air fares. According to a source, the Korean Railroad can adjust fares for freight, special seats, and bed-furnished compartments without government permission. Train fares can increase up to 7.3% from the second half of the year.

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation yesterday announced that it submitted a revised bill to the National Assembly under the name of Application of Flexible Train Fares and Reinforcement of Fare Autonomy.

It will be discussed during the National Assembly¡¯s regular session and applied in the second half of next year. Train fares have previously been determined after agreement between the Minister Construction and the Minister Finance.

It is known that the revised bill allows the Korean Railroad to establish train fares within the maximum that the government allows. In the event the revised bill is passed by the National Assembly, the railroad can apply more flexible train fares on weekends and peak periods. Currently, KTX gives discount fares to groups and those who reserve seats 30 days in advance.

A source from the Ministry of Construction and Transportation said that the maximum train fares will be raised within an average of 7.3%. KTX will be set within 3%, 12% for Semaeul, and Mugunghwa, and 10% for freight trains.
