BCCI Asks for Redevelopment of Busan North Port

It is reported that the chairman of the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) along with 80 members asked President Roh Moo-hyun for support of redevelopment of Busan North Port. Some analysts say that they worry about the government¡¯s lack of intention for the port¡¯s development and of financial support.
According to the Busan Port Authority (BPA) and Busan Metropolitan City, since the redevelopment project of Busan North Port was launched by President Roh, who visited in September of 2004, nobody can assure that the project can proceed after this administration. The project will cost over 10 trillion won to complete.
Due to unstable financial support from the government, the BPA and Busan citizens urged the administration to make a special law for redevelopment of Busan North Port. The Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries, however, is very passive toward it because the ministry has a plan to formulate a law, called the Special Law for Redevelopment of Ports, which covers ports across the nation. In addition, both the Ministry of Construction and Transportation and the Ministry of Planning and Budget are currently taking a negative attitude to support Busan North Port.
The Ministry of Construction and Transportation, in particular, is now taking a position against constructing a 2.5 km-long underpass railroad between Busan Station and Busan Jin Station, which can delay KTX railroad work. Some local officials say it will be difficult to receive government financing due to Busan officials¡¯ lukewarm lobbying of the central government.
