Busan slims down

It is reported that the population and economic volume of Busan has been slimming down compared to ten years ago, whereas quality of life is a little improved. According to the Busan Statistics Office, the population of Busan is reduced to 3,650,000, down 6.0% compared to 1995. The office analyzed changes over the last ten years with regard to social, economic industry and other areas of Busan.

According to the report, the phenomenon of aging of the Busan population is rapidly growing, whereas the economically active population of Busan is reduced from 1,773,000 in 1995 to 1,698,000 in 2005, down 4.2%. In the case of the number employed, it is down from 1,709,000 in 1995 to 1,624,000 in 2005.

The number of Busan-based companies increased from 244,000 in 1994 to 267,000 in 2005, up 9.4%, but the number of companies with over 5 employees decreased from 9,304 in 1994 to 9,262 in 2005, down 0.5%. Exports rose from 6.4 billion dollars in 1995 to 6.7 billion dollars, up 4.6%. The economic occupancy rate of Busan-based companies fell from 5.2% in 1995 to 2.4% in 2005.

In addition, the number of students per class in Busan was 27.3 children in kindergarten in 1995, down 15.0%; 30.0 students in elementary school in 1995, down 23.3%; 34.7 students in 1995, down 33.5%; and 33.1 students in 1995, down 32.6%. The report estimates this phenomenon is due to improved educational sectors. With regard to quality of life, the number of medical institutions was 3,884 in 2004, up 10%, and the number of doctors in Busan is estimated at 5,424.
