Korean National Competitiveness Down

Korea was ranked 38th in national competitiveness, down 9 places compared to last year, which is the worst since 2000. International Management Development in Switzerland released its statistics from surveying 61 countries under the title of ¡°Yearbook of 2006 International Competitiveness.¡± According to the yearbook, Korea was ranked 38th in nation competitiveness.
However, China jumped 12 places, and India rose ten places to 29th. Japan, ranked at 17th, also rose. According to the report, the first four countries were the same as last year: the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Ireland. The US has been consecutively ranked in the first place for 17 years.
The reason Korean national competitiveness has been continuously falling is due to administrative inefficiency in the government and management inefficiency in domestic enterprises. The report says that the Korean government¡¯s administrative inefficiency fell from 31st up to 47th. With respect to management efficiency of domestic enterprises, the relationship between labor and management was ranked at 45, the worst ranking for consecutive 3 years.
Regarding the result of the statistics, Kim Won-gyu of the Korean Industrial Development Institute, that surveys domestic industrial competitiveness, said, ¡°I think it was very influenced by the domestic social environment at the time the questionnaire was conducted in February and March, when a worse domestic environment, such as the Lone Star feud, skyrocketing oil prices, and the soaring currency exchange rate was happening.¡±
