Special Economic Integration Law for Southeastern Busan

In order to drive economic integration between Busan city and Yangsan city, the two mayoral candidates for local election from the ruling Uri Party yesterday made a Memorandum of Understanding and agreed to propel legislation for a Special Economic Integration Law for Southeastern Busan. They announced it during a press conference yesterday at the Paragon Hotel in Sasang-gu, Busan.

During the press conference, the two candidates asserted, ¡°As the two cities are realistically a single zone, it is time consuming and triggers district selfishness between two administrative spheres,¡± adding, ¡°Therefore, it is necessary to establish an economic integration belt for the 21st Century economic environment."

To make it realistic, the candidates agreed to: allot industrial complexes by dividing mutual roles, move the Busan tollgate to Yangsan, connect the subway line between Busan and Yangsan, and establish public transportation networks between the outskirts of Busan, Gimhae and Yangsan.

According to the Uri Party, it is expected that, through this process, companies that have faced difficulties in doing business in administratively separated cities can overcome the barriers caused by administrative limitations, and disputes caused by regional selfishness between residents and municipalities will be lessened as well. The party said it would plan to link the two cities¡¯ economic integration belts with Japanese economic integration cluster belts in the near future.

Busan mayoral candidate Oh stated that it is very necessary to integrate the economic zones of Busan and Gimhae for a greater synergistic effect.
