LG Electronics not to consider TOEIC score anymore

LG Electronics said yesterday that it would no longer consider the TOEIC scores of job applicants. Instead of TOEIC, which is a listening and reading-oriented test, it is considering the Spoken English Proficiency Test (SEPT) from 2008, which is developed to assess speaking proficiency.

However, LG will use TOEIC scores as evidence for promotions by the end of this year. They are also considering whether or not the newly developed TOEIC will be accepted for staff promotions after reviewing the new TOEIC constituents. According to a source from ETS, a speaking section will be added soon.

The reason LG Electronics substitutes SEPT for TOEIC is because of the globalized business environment where spoken communication is demanded rather that reading and writing proficiency. As known, SEPT is a speaking evaluation test through direct interview with a SEPT test evaluator.

LG Electronics has assessed the speaking ability of its executives every quarter since 2004, and recently over 200 staff members took SEPT on April 29. It also created an in-company system where all staff should communicate in English from 2009 in order to enhance global management.

As a first step for this system, the LG Electronics factory in Changwon began a campaign at the beginning this year to encourage staff to communicate with others in English over the phone. A source from LG Electronics says, ¡°As introducing SEPT as evidence for staff promotions, we expect the speaking proficiency of employees in the business field will be greatly improved hereafter.¡±
