72% for FTA with Education and Medical Service

Amid the increasing row over the Korean-USA Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in the nation, it is surveyed that most people are for opening educational, medical services, and legal sectors, but not agricultural sectors. According to a survey conducted by TNS that questioned 700 people regarding the core disputes over the FTA, 66.7% replied they are against opening the agricultural and livestock industries.
The results of the survey showed that 72.7% are for opening the educational sector; 72.4% for medical services; 64.6% for law and accounting industries; 61.9% for social services; and 60.3% for automobile markets. With respect to opening film industry, 44.7% were for it, whereas 43.0% were against it.
By social class, it is particularly differentiated: those who are under 30, well-educated, high income, and office workers considered it positively; meanwhile those who are over 50, not well-educated, low-income, workers in agricultural industries, and housewives were relatively negative.
A researcher says, ¡°It is clear that those who work in uncompetitive sectors have a relatively higher feeling of uneasiness, so the government should consider finding proper alternatives prior to finalizing the agreement, and drawing public attention.¡±
