Comparing Prices Amongst Department Stores, Discount Stores,
, and Local Markets
According to results of a survey, prices of products in wholesale markets and local traditional markets are much lower compared to those of department stores and major discount stores. In case of potatoes, a customer can purchase them at 1,000 won for 1 kg, while they are over 1,980 won per 1 kg in department stores and major discount markets. A department store sells them at 3,900 won, 4 times higher than that of a traditional market.
Another example is tomatoes within the price range of below 2,500 won per kilogram in wholesale markets, however, most distributors provide 1 kg of tomatoes at over 5,500 won. One more example is strawberries at 5,000 won in a traditional market, while other discount markets sell them at 9,715 won. The survey says that only Top Mart in Haeundae sells them at a price similar to a traditional market.
More interestingly, the survey shows that prices of products in a department store and a discount store aren’t much different. Some markets were higher than a department store. As an example, Lotte Mart in Hwamyong-dong sells strawberries at a higher price compared to Hyundai and Lotte department stores. The survey indicates that the market sells tomatoes and sweet potatoes at higher prices than those of the department stores. Another discount store that sells sweet potatoes with a higher price is Samsung Homeplus in Sasang-gu. It offers them at 4,930 won, higher than that of the two department stores. In case of Lotte Department Store, it sells potatoes at the highest price at 3,900 won amongst local distributors, and Top Mart in Haeundae sells tomatoes the highest at 6,800 won.
With regards to quality, color, and taste of products, the two department stores provide customers with good quality products. Both Hyundai and Lotte department stores display a variety of strawberries and tomatoes. Like department stores, most discount stores also sell a good qualify of products. The survey shows that Mega Mart in Namchon-dong sells a variety of good products and displays them in good arrangement. In respect to the origin of products, it was hard to determine.
