Manufacturing up Slightly, Non-Manufacturing Industry Falls

According to a survey on industrial trends in Busan conducted yesterday by the Busan branch of the Bank of Korea, manufacturing fields were slightly being restored, whereas non-manufacturing fields fell.

The survey, entitled ¡®Tone of Busan Economic Trends in March¡¯, indicates the BSI (Bank for International Settlement) for manufacturing sectors in Busan was up compared to last year, and the BSI this month in the local manufacturing sector hit a record since 2003. An expert says, ¡°Now we are watch dogging the trends.¡±

In particular, it was shown that there was a significant increase in the heavy industry, chemical industry and light industry sectors, export-centered businesses, and domestic home-targeting industries.

Contrary to manufacturing sectors, the BIS of the non-manufacturing sectors in Busan was down 17% compared to last year. Hwang Moon Sung, head of the economic investigation division, stated, ¡°Due to devaluation of the Japanese currency, the decreasing number of Japanese tourists who visited Busan can be seen as one of the main factors which influenced the accommodations and food-related service sectors.

¡°The prospective economic trends of manufacturing sectors in Busan, compared to the year of 1997, will be bright,¡± said an unnamed source.
