The First day Cell Phone Subsidy Starts
“I am very disappointed because it is a lower subsidy than I expected.” said a cell phone buyer. “Though many visitors hear about subsidies, almost half of them aren’t interested in purchasing a cell phone.”
Most domestic mobile carriers say that there was a flood of calls from prospective mobile phone purchasers, but major carriers’ announcements regarding the subsidy range disappointed them because of lower subsidies than they expected.
According to a release yesterday, three domestic mobile carriers set the scope of the newly legalized mobile phone subsidies between 50,000 won and 210,000 won. It stated that those who maintain a wireless account with the same carrier for longer than 18 months can get the subsidies once over the next two years. One of the largest telecom companies, SK Telecom, decided to subsidize new handset buyers between 70,000 won and 190,000 won, relying on subscription period and the latest six-month rates.
A mobile phone store owner in Seomyeon said, “From early morning I have received more than one hundred calls, almost double, and over 150 people visited my store, but most were disappointed.”
Another phone store owner said, “I’m a little confused how to estimate, since I haven’t been notified by mobile carriers in detail yet,” adding, “I think that the subsidy announcement hasn’t worked yet.”
