¡°If someone wants to do translation and interpretation work, they should build up cultural knowledge and experience the target culture since linguistic knowledge alone cannot make his or her interpretation work satisfying.¡± said interpretation freelancer Kim Na-kyoung. She is an experienced interpreter working in Busan. She has participated in most major Busan BEXCO exhibitions.
She also accentuates that a major key in interpretation work is to build up various knowledge and advance preparations. In addition, she stresses that having wide interests is also important for prospective interpreters. Her educational background and career are unique. She majored in fashion design at KVB Art School in Australia, building up her experience in interpretation while staying there. She thinks it is a cornerstone of her career.
The 2000 Sydney Olympic Games was her first interpretation experience. ¡°While being in charge of the Korean national team at the Sydney Paralympics, I realized that this work is one of the most valuable activities, and I felt patriotic working there as well.¡± In the following year, she interpreted at an international rock festival when returning to Korea. Since then, she has been doing interpretation at major international conventions in Busan.
She said, ¡°At the moment that an export contract between buyer and exporter is realized, an interpreter can feel very satisfied,¡± adding, ¡°As the Chinese market is growing, the number of buyers who visit Busan has been decreasing.¡± Kim gives advice to prospective interpretations that the work is very stressful, but there is also satisfaction.
