City Residents Eat out Half of their Meals

It was surveyed that, on average, urban residents ate outside their homes for half of their total meals last year. According to the National Statistical Office, each household paid 48.5% of their meal costs, an average of 565,416 won per month. It was up 3,825 won compared to the previous year.

The survey indicated that due to the increase of females¡¯ job opportunities as time goes by, the meal expenditure to eat out of each household increased: 41.8% in 2000, 43.3% in 2001, 44.2% in 2002, and 47.5% in 2003. Of grocery costs per household, the meal expenditure for eating-out reached only 4.1% in 1980, which increased to 8.1% in 1985, 20.2% in 1989, and 30.3% in 1994. In addition, the survey showed that overall urban household¡¯s on average paid 46.4%, as much as 255,850 won, out of its grocery costs per month.

In case of rural households, their expenditure to eat out increased to 246,876 won per month and was 45.8% of their total grocery costs. Regarding the increase of eating-out expenditure by rural households, the Korea Rural Economic Institute explained that the scale of the domestic eating-out market has doubled and it already stepped into the maturity phase.¡±

In particular, the survey pointed out ¡°Though the share of eating-out expenditure of dietary life was expanded, it hasn¡¯t been viewed as a main policy target by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy. In addition, nowadays there is no administrative ministry to develop alternative policies for the eating-out industry and estimate about it.¡±
