A domestic quarrel to attract the IOC general meeting
in Busan.
Although family members may quarrel from time to time, eventually there must be reconciliation. Likewise, regional feuds within a country must also eventually be reconciled especially when it is displayed on the international stage. It is much to be regretted that, while Busan city is appearing to induce the 13th Olympic general meeting and the 121st IOC (International Olympic Committee) general meeting, the foreign press released that ‘friction inside South Korea is fettering the inducement of Busan general meeting.’
According to the internet report of ‘Around the rinks’, a special medium for Olympic news, ‘S. Korea has made the state of affairs that they are picking on each other because some worry that Busan city’s effort to attract a general meeting can make Pyeongchang County’s plan to host the Winter Olympics result in failure.
It was not prudent that Cho Kil-woo, the chairman of a Busan city assembly, and Kim Ho, a special aide of Korea Olympic Committee, visited Europe and contacted a member of the IOC and figures of the sporting world in the excess of their will. Yet, to our astonishment, a secret official document from the IOC, which points out an offense against morals regulation and demands summons, was leaked to the domestic press. Some doubt that the government or KOC might have purposefully leaked this. As conflicts inside the country are reported to the foreign press, inducement of Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as well as a Busan general meeting can be badly affected.
Once South Korea, which hosted the Olympic Games and World Cup, keeps trying to attract somewhat big international sport event continuously, other countries must keep in check. Therefore, at the national level, we should select and focus on it. Even so, it is absurd to say thus and thus such as ‘recommendation to withdrawal inducement’ about Busan which rises to the surface as the strongest city. Considering that ‘a Mohammed satirical cartoon’ appeared in a Denmark daily has enraged the Arab world, , Busan has a high possibility of inducing it. With the IOC general meeting, two days ahead, Busan metropolitan city and KOC should make their all-out efforts to reconcile these matters. Pyeongchang’s inducement for the Winter Olympics is the next thing to do.
