Pyongyang Reconfirms No Further Business with Hyundai
on Gaesung and Mt. Baekdu Projects

According a government source on Jan. 20, it was revealed that Pyongyang reiterated there would be no further business partnership with Hyundai for the Gaesung and Mt. Baekdu projects, which North Korea is now aggressively moving forward.

The source stated that, during a bilateral meeting between South and North working-level officials held in Gaesung from Jan. 9 thru 11, one of the top-ranking North Korean officials related to the Chosun Asian Pacific Commission, expressed strong discontent in regards to the unreasonable dismissal of former Vice-President Kim Un-Gyu, by current Hyundai Chairperson Chung.

Regarding Kim¡¯s dismissal by Hyundai, Pyongyang delivered a negative message on the partnership, barring Hyundai from further business and asserting strong discontent to Hyundai. In the middle of this unsynchronized situation between the two business partners, Seoul took an aggressive position to play a role as mediator and dramatically bridged the crack.

Yet, a number of experts interpret the statement as a high-level, intentional announcement, aiming to induce strong competition among South Korean companies and thereby gain more benefits from the projects.
