Kimchi exports down by half
Due to parasite eggs found in kimchi, exports have declined to half the amount of last year, reaching the lowest record. In particular, the amount exported to Japan, the main kimchi export market, is dramatically down.
According to the Agricultural and Fishery Marketing Corporation, exports were down by 46.5% compared to the same month last year.
This phenomenon was triggered by the announcement of the Korean Food & Drug Administration that parasite eggs were found with Korean kimchi as well as Chinese kimchi. A survey revealed that due to reduced consumption in the Japanese market that 94.3% of Korean domestic kimchi covered was dramatically declined.
Due to the dramatic reduction of imported Chinese kimchi in domestic restaurants, the amount of kimchi imported from China has also declined as much as 43.5%, compared to the same month of last year.
