The Number of Japanese Tourists Declining

Due to the declining number of Japanese tourists, Busan hotels are struggling to discover other avenues to lure guests.
During the past two years, many Japanese tourists visited Busan because of Hanryu, dubbed the Korean Wave. Yet, conflicting issues related to Korea, such as the matter of Dok Do, Japanese Prime Minister¡¯s continued visits to Yasakuni Shrine, and the recent value of the Japanese yen have a negative influence on the hotel business.
According to a source from Busan Lotte Hotel, the hotel has found that reservations have declined by 20% compared to the same month last year. This phenomenon is currently affecting other Busan local hotels, too. In the case of Hotel Nongshim, reservations are down by 14% compared to last year. It is true that such a trend influences the local hotel business area, leading to disappointment because local hotels have expected positive post-APEC effects. Paradise Hotel is also facing difficulty attracting Japanese tourists.
A local hotel source said, ¡°We analyze that the main factor resulting in the decline of Japanese tourists visit originated from the Dok Do Islet conflict with Japan. Due to the phenomenon, local hotels are searching various other ways to attract Japanese tourists, such as offering theme-based tours.
