Free trade, ¡®Busan Roadmap¡¯ to be adopted

The 13th Busan APEC Summit Talks, in which the leaders of 21 member nations will participate, began officially at Busan Bexco in the afternoon of Nov. 18th and will continue for two days with first and second rounds of summit talks.
Twenty-one leaders or representatives, including chairman President Roh Moo-Hyun of the Republic of Korea, took part in the first round of summit talks today with US President George W. Bush, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Vladmir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, and others.
Today¡¯s meeting focused on trade and economy as part of the development of trade liberalization¡¯. In addition, a ¡®Busan Roadmap¡¯ was announced, which includes the redoubling of APEC¡¯s efforts to make progress in the negotiations of the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) as a medium-term plan to promote the accomplishment of ¡®the Bogor Goals¡¯ and the examination of an additional liberalization management when completing the negotiations of the DDA.
At today¡¯s opening address President Roh emphasized the role of APEC in contributing to the development of world history and the prosperity of human beings. He proposed plans for joint efforts to settle social gaps within APEC nations through economic and technical cooperation. It is also known that President Roh will suggest the reinforcement of multilateral trade systems, education of industries and enterprises within APEC nations, and a plan to settle the bipolarization.
Shortly after the two-hour meeting, the APEC Business Advisory Council is scheduled to discuss a special statement to settle the DDA negotiations of the World Trade Organization, the accomplishment of the Bogor Goals, and trade harmony.
After enjoying the IT exhibition on the first floor of BEXCO, the leaders will move to dinner and appreciate cultural performances.
Prior to this, President Roh will have two-way talks with Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi to discuss matters of interest between the countries.
In the mean time, the APEC CEO Summit, the largest-scale forum of business leaders in the world, closed in the afternoon of Nov. 18th. They successfully completed the three-day official schedule after adopting a declaration on anti-corruption.
