Ramsar General Meeting will be in Gyeongsangnam-do.
Gyeongsangnam-do has been designated as the venue for the 10th Ramsa Agreement General Meeting in 2008, after the 9th Ramsa Agreement General Meeting held in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, Africa. The Ramsa Agreement is the international convention on wetlands of international importance, especially as waterfowl habitat, which was adopted in Ramsa in Iran.
South Korea joined the Agreement in 1997. There are 144 member countries that have joined the Ramsa Agreement. A Ramsa General Meeting is called an "Environmental Olympics". Thousands of authorities from member country governments and non-governmental organizations take part in the international conventions, which are held every three years.
Gyeongsangnam-do stands high as the central place for the "Environmental Olympics," which may well be said to become an international leader in protecting the environment. The world will pay attention to the natural environment of Gyeongsangnam-do such as Changnyoung Upo Swamp, Yangsan Sinbulsan Highland Swamp, Yansan Whaum Swamp and Junam Lake.
Having the opportunity to hold the general meeting, South Korea will have to let the world know her nature-friendly policies. The national government should broadcast that the whole nation, along with Gyeongsangnam-do has such nature-friendly policies. First of all, they have to establish the infrastructure for the future progressive environmental industry.
Holding this general meeting is the result of the efforts of the local government, the national government, and environmental organizations, as well as the Citizens' Coalition for the Natural Environment. Although they failed to host the "2005 Ramsa Agreement Convention", they tried hard and their efforts finally bore fruit. Some suspected their ability, but they overcame difficulties and attained an invaluable result.
However, hosting the Ramsa General Meeting is only the beginning. In order to get a good result from the general meeting, Gyeongsangnam-do has to work hard. Firstly, to operate a smooth meeting, they should double check the facilities for the meeting and prepare the contents thoroughly. The national government will also have to actively support Gyeongsangnam-do as opening the Ramsa convention can be an opportunity to broadcast the image of South Korea.
