New Airport Plan in Southern Area.
A new airport construction plan in the Southern Area has been added to the fourth national territory comprehensive draft amendment (2005-2020) which will be decided next year. An authority from the Ministry of Construction and Transportation said that the draft was designed after discussions with the heads of the five southern districts, including Busan and Daegu.
It is very encouraging that they accepted the service report, saying that in the present situation with low economic efficiency, they estimated the plan had a low priority, but they should prepare for long term demand for airline business. The pending tasks are to procure financial budget amounting to 12 to 20 trillion won, and to have a detailed plan for a new airport.
The government should not regard new airport construction as a long-term task. The safety standards of Kimhae International Airport are 29 times more dangerous than that of international standards. In addition, without a new airport in the southern area, citizens in Busan have to use Incheon airport and will pay additional charges of 7 trillion won by the fourth national territory comprehensive draft amendment has been realized in 2020. They should not neglect the economic cost to citizens in the southern area.
What is more, there are enough justification and propriety. They should build a new airport in the Busan district in order to make Busan a hub of the distribution industry in north-eastern Asia with the beginning of New Port. After the establishment of the distribution industry base, they should build a new airport as infrastructure for the transportation of human resources. It will take at least 15 years to complete a new airport. They should go ahead with the plan for a new airport now.
Citizens in Busan have long been wishing to begin construction of a new airport and now it's time to open the prelude. They should not just give lip service to the citizens in order to collect votes for next year's local election. The government should announce its plan and budget in detail. Some local autonomy offices in the southern districts should actively participate in the working level talks with the national government for the construction of a new airport.
