Diverse Nominees for Supreme Court

Characteristics of three candidates for the Supreme Court, nominated by Chief Justice Lee Yong-hoon, can be summarized as "diversity" and "stability".
They are a human rights lawyer, a labor specialist not coming
from Seoul University, and a standard lawyer from positions in the district court to positions in the nation's top court.
Their positions were well received by law circles. It is highly expected that they will try the principle of adding diversity to the members of the Supreme Court so as to get rid of the conservative colors.
They have experience that is highly regarded and knowledge of the law, so so-called "main stream lawyers¡± have occupied most of the important positions in the nation¡¯s top court. The lawyers have been criticized for being too conservative to consider the underdog, and interpreted some laws behind the times. Some people strongly believe the Supreme Court should take an open-minded attitude and renovate itself.
It is positively estimated that Chief Justice Lee has nominated the three candidates in order to eliminate old practices of bureaucracy, such as ranking and giving a predecessor the precedence. As the three lawyers have the backing of varying groups of young lawyers, it is much expected that they can progressively apply laws to reflect diverse social values and interests. Some South Koreans expect the judiciary to undergo a complete change.
Some people have apprehensions as well as expectations. It is criticized that they are the revival of "coded personnel management". They have to listen to the voice of the people. It is said that in order to meet the varying standards of the government, he nominated "coded lawyers" from the Korea Bar Association, who get along well with the Administration. The impending tasks are to renovate the judiciary and to accommodate varying opinions of minority groups. The lawyers shouldn't be at the mercy of pressure from public opinion and succumb to authority. The three new justices of the Supreme Court should bear in mind that the proposition of the judiciary is the independence of jurisdiction.
