Postage Rate Increases with Every Stamp
Five Times Last Year to Strike a Blow at the Public

The postage rate continuously increases one after another and imposes a heavy burden on the populace and on mail-order firms.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communication on October 17th, Korea Post keeps organizing a raise in the rates for various services, including ordinary mail, parcel post and home-delivery service. They have already been increased five times up to now since last year. Korea Post gives its reason as to minimize the balance of the establishment's current account and stands on the compensational rate of the prime cost.
The government already raised the parcel post rates up to 33% and home-delivery service was up by 1000 won, depending on the weight of the parcel.
Moreover, the national commerce postage rate was up 11.8% from 160 won to 190 won, the express letter rate was up from 240 won to 270 won and newspapers, magazines, other quantity and publicity mail that are registered as periodical publications face increased charges from November 1st, 2004.
Lowering the discount price in quantity and publicity mail has been taken action to pay the same standard rates as general mail from June 1st, 2005. Also, in August the service charge for handling registered mail was raised 13.4% from 1300 won to 1500 won.
In addition, international aerial parcel charges will go up by 7% in overall level and international express mail service (EMS) is expected to increase by 0.3% in general, regulated by regional groups and weight, from the 17th of this month.
