Bill to impose high taxes on soju and LNG to be withdrawn.

It seems that the bill the Korean government prepared to impose high taxes on soju and liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be withdrawn.

During a meeting with ruling party policy-makers, President Roh said, ¡°It is possible to withdraw the bill if there has been negative public opinion against the bill,¡± adding, ¡°It is hard to refuse public opinion.¡±

It can be assumed that he took sides with the ruling party rather than the Cabinet, because there have been a series of assertions against imposing high taxes on the items from the ruling party.

With regards to a revised bill on restructuring the financial industry, President Roh said, ¡°Rather than time-consuming argument, we have to get ideas in a bid to restore the sluggish Korean economy. And the Korean government will try to preserve the idea that all are equal in law, create an environment where citizens do not have negative feelings toward Korean conglomerates, and encourage local manufacturers to invest.¡± He emphasized rational resolutions for the good of all.

Concerning the August 31 Real Estate Law, President Roh stressed that the purpose of the law should not be corrupted while making new legislation during the regular National Assembly session.

During the meeting with president Roh, the participants asked him to widen the central government¡¯s aggressive financial support of Free Economic Zones.
