Big Gap Between Domestic and International Cell Phone Prices

It appears that there are big differences between cell phone prices for domestic products and export products. It is proven that large domestic mobile carriers have sold their products at higher prices compared with products for international markets.

Therefore, there are soaring complaints from phone users, arguing that domestic manufacturers have taken unreasonable profits from the domestic market.

According to data presented to opposition party policymaker Shim Jae Yeop, it was revealed that prices differ for mobile phones sold by the largest mobile carriers (Samsung, LG electronics, and Curitel) for domestic and international markets.

It was also revealed that prices for domestic consumption are twice that of international markets.

It showed that domestic prices have increased yearly, selling at 280,6000 won in the year 2001; 324,000 won in 2002; 347,000 won in 2003; and 363,000 won in 2004, whereas export prices have consecutively decreased, selling at 197,000 won in the year 2001; 189,000 won in 2002; 182,000 won in 2003; 175,000 won in 2004.

More importantly, it is shown that the average domestic sale price during the first quarter of this year reached 350,000 won, but only 159,000 won for export products, causing a big gap.
