Hot Weekend Marketing Starts

The five-day-work-week policy in private and public sectors employing over 1,000 has been enforced since July 2004, and will be, from next month, expanded to sectors employing over 300.

This means that around 30 percent (2 million) of all Korean laborers will be its beneficiaries. In the wake of this policy, responses are mixed between the local leisure related industries, small sized manufacturers and restaurants.

As a multitude of local outdoor activities are expected, Busan based footwear manufacturers have been quickening their pace of production. "We are planning to develop functional multi-purpose footwear for work and Mountaineering," said Moon Chang Seop, President of Sam Deok Inc. Another footwear company, Trekstar, hired world renowned mountaineer, Um Honggil, as a director, so as to spark its brand publicity and boost sales. Also, they plan to increase production of multipurpose footwear, they announced Friday.

Other local industries, such as Hyundai and Lotte Department Stores, and Marriott Hotel have upped employment and entirely committed to attracting increasing numbers of prospective guests. One Busan based food industry, The Outback Steakhouse, has been also reinforcing its marketing through TV advertising on weekends.

Other local industries exclusive of this five-day-work-week policy show different reactions. "Because of this booming stage in shipbuilding industries, we have a lot of work to do. So we are not satisfied with the system." one shipbuilding engineer said.

"I feel very negative about it, so I might close down soon." one owner of a small restaurant said.

"It is clear that this system is going to close lots of small restaurants down" said a member of the Busan Branch of the Korea Restaurant Association.
