1.Scientists are discovering that viral
infections may damage your arteries.
A provocative preliminary study at the University of Texas Medical School in
Houston revealed that heart patients
who'd had a flu shot were 67 per cent less likely to experience a second heart attack than those who hadn't.
Another study suggests that older
people who had a cold-sore virus were
twice as likely to have a heart attack or
die from heart disease as people who didn't. An Italian study found evidence that chronic infections, such as sinusitis, bronchitis and even urinary-tract infections, might raise
the risk of hardened arteries.
2.In a study conducted at the University of Maryland Medical Centre in Baltimore,
scientists asked 150 men and women with
heart disease and 150 healthy people how
likely they'd be to laugh in various
scenarios-say,a waiter spilling a drink in
their lap
Healthy people were 60 per cent more
likely to laugh People with heart disease
tended to be angry,even hostile.
If you don't laugh much,it would not hurt
to lean back, read the comics, watch a funny movie and try to take yourself less
seriously.
3.A few years ago doctors were saying that to reap the benefits of exercise, you
had to perform a vigorous activity such as jogging several times a week. Now it
appears that any exercise can save your
heart. A recent report found that women 45 and older who walked for at least an
hour a week cut their heart-disease risk in half. Men,too, benefit from small amounts
of exercise. Even moderate activities like golf or gardening help reduce their risk of heart attack.
'The important thing is just to do it,'
says Harvard Sesso,an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health.
4.The blues can be a real killer.
In a Canadian study,75 per cent of people with depression died the year after a heart attack, compared with 2.5 per cent of those who weren't depressed.
Can depression actually bring on a heart attack? That's the implication of a study
published last year. Wake Forest University researchers tracked 2847 people older than 55 for four years. They found that people with serious depression were three times more likely to die of heart disease than
those with a sunnier outlook. Even mild
depression could be deadly: this group had a fatality rate 50 per cent higher than
normal.
The link could be explained by studies
showing that depressed people tend not to exercise or eat properly.
5.A poll sponsored in part by American Heart Association Heart Association found that 47 per cent of people don't know the warning signs of a heart attack;63 per cent would miss the early signs of a stroke. Most heart attacks start with:
*Uncomfortable chest pressure pain for more than a few minutes.
*Shoulder,neck or arm pain.
*Shortness of breath.
*Less common signs include nausea, lightheadedness and a cold sweat.
6.In fact, any furred,or feathered friend helps your blood pressure. In one study,48 superachieving stockbrokers who lived alone and had high blood pressure were put
through a series of stress tests, such as
explaining they had lost £¤85,000 of a
client's money. As expected,their blood
pressure skyrocketed.
Half the brokers were told to get a cat or dog. Six months later the pet group
reacted far less strongly to stress. Even when their blood pressure shot up,it
remained in the normal range, says the
study's lead author,Karen Allen of the
State University of New York at Buffalo. Allen speculates that 'it's because pets offer a nonjudgmental, unconditional social
support.'
